On January 2, 2023, a hockey game between the Boston Bruins and the Pittsburgh Penguins took place inside historic Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox, which is known as the Winter Classic.

The Winter Classic and Its Signage Needs:

The Winter Classic is an annual outdoor NHL (National Hockey League) game Inaugurated in 2008, and it has been played almost every year since. As one of the biggest sporting events of the year, the Winter Classic requires custom banners and signs that are not only visually striking but also able to withstand the elements. This year’s event was the second such game at Fenway Park, and the third time that the Boston Bruins have served as the home team as the 2016 Winter Classic was played in Gillette Stadium, home of the New England Patriots.

The Game:

After a game-winning goal by winger Jake DeBrusk of the Boston Bruins with two minutes and thirty-three seconds left in regulation, the Bruins delighted their crowd to a 2-1 victory over the Penguins.

Every year, massive sporting events such as the Winter Classic, the Super Bowl, and the Masters grab our attention. The 2023 Winter Classic was played in front of 39,243 fans at Fenway Park, in addition to 1.77 million TV viewers. For such a popular event, the small details matter, and providing custom banners and signs that were able to withstand the elements and also showcase the Winter Classic’s brand identity was a massive undertaking.

The Solution:

The team at Grand Image was able to turn around a plethora of custom banners and signs for the Winter Classic within 2-3 days, which is very fast in the printing industry. The signs were printed on several types of materials:

1. Corrugated plastic, which is lightweight and weather-resistant, making it a perfect material for outdoor signage for a one-day event. This material was used for wayfinding signs around the stadium, including entrance signs that included instructions on entrance procedures.
2. Vinyl banners that can showcase graphics at an extremely high quality in an indoor space. Our vinyl banners could be found inside of Fenway Park, such as near a first aid station.
3. Fabric mesh fence banners that allow for wind to easily pass through without the need for large holes in the material that obstruct your image. We displayed the logos of the Bruins and the Penguins on these massive banners, and we also ordered special fabric mesh specifically for this project.
4. Knitted fabric single reverse flags, which is a flag with a graphic printed on one side that allows the image to bleed through to the other side. Even though the image on the other side is seen in reverse, your brain is still able to process the information on that graphic as if you were reading it normally. These flags showcased the Winter Classic 2023 logo in addition to team logos.

White inks might not seem like a big deal at first. We print on white vinyl so the whites are already there. White ink isn’t just about the white in your image. White inks are used for day/night backlit printing on clear SAV. Basically, with a layer of white inks images can be printed so the colors look the same when back or front lit. Normally backlit images look over-saturated when front lit. Day/Night printing allows prints to be presented both ways.

When creating a themed environment you want to go all out. Trade show booths are getting pretty out there, so you can’t just put a table throw on and call it a day. Well you could, but your traffic will be light!

A themed environment ensures your exhibit will get noticed. It doesn’t have to be outlandish, although outlandish can help. But combining different sets of printed graphics to create unified visual messaging helps tremendously. Now you can take it to the next level with giant 3D props and really blow people away. Last year we exhibited Grand 3D at Global Shop and had a nice booth but wanted to blow it out of the water this year. We decided on a jungle theme to go along with our T-Rex head. To really bring it all together that would mean combining nearly all of our printing capabilities: 3D sculpture, dye sublimation, SAV, SEG, it was all coming together in this booth.

We originally planned a volcanic theme but found mounting the T-Rex would be difficult. We couldn’t hang it and you can’t hard mount a sculpture to a fabric SEG graphic! Our team came up with the idea of having the T-Rex peer around a tree with the head resting on the roots and went from there.

The kicker would be joining the 3D sculpture with the backlit silicone edge graphic backdrop. The body of a T-Rex was inserted so that when the head was placed in front of it, the illusion of a full dinosaur came together.

Dye sub fabrics are vital because they are printed in high definition and just have a more premium look. No nasty reflections or scrim to deal with! SEG also creates a perfect fit for the backdrop ensuring no sags or creases in show floor selfies.

From there it was time for the icing, direct printed carpet with a 3D effect rock logo, pole banners on the side and a table throw each adding to the theme.

We did add one thing off theme, because as great as themes are the point of a trade show is to sell. Grand 3D’s biggest seller are 3D letters. Letters are huge for exhibits, TED talk type events, museums, commercials, really everything. So we made sure to include them. We made them autobody smooth too!

In the end we recorded more leads than ever before at a trade show. We’d combined the greater stopping power of 3D (6x that of traditional 2D graphics) and the easier messaging of print in one blow away exhibit.
